🏙️ Reshaping city centers

Inside: Articulate, Zillow, and EDB are hiring remote workers. Plus: Portland, Denver, Austin, and Raleigh are some of the metros with the highest share of remote workers.

Good Morning,

Interesting anti-remote work propaganda from The Economist this week.

They published data that highlights the share of remote workers in various cities (actually cool graphic below) but also framed remote work as the reason city centers are hurting.

Their Instagram post says “Despite efforts to pull staff back to the office, remote work has become entrenched in America,” later followed by “City budgets are under strain; workers staying home exacerbates the problem.”

Fortunately, all of the most-liked comments are from rational people citing that remote work doesn’t need to be taking outsized blame for city budget woes.

Sure, if more people work from home, city centers will change. But we don’t need to build our societies around an outdated way of working.

My favorite comment: “Change the dynamics of the city to work for the people. The city serves the people, not the other way around.”
