🤷🏻‍♂️ What does "remote-first" mean?

Inside: Airbnb is hiring in engineering, data science, and marketing. Plus: remote work for rural America, a working mom exodus, Croatia's new nomad visa, remote work policy definitions, and more.

Good Morning,

I recently combed through over 1,000 company career pages to see which ones are truly “remote-first” in nature — in my mind, this means they allow all employees to work from anywhere they choose.

It was sometimes mind-boggling to see what employers will put on their career pages about remote work.

Some companies included a hybrid work schedule as one of their perks. Maybe they haven’t realized that most companies allow at least one remote day per week now, and that’s not a perk that will make them stand out.

One company said they are “remote-first” BUT then said they defined “remote-first” as having more remote days (3) than office-days (2). I wonder if they know the term “hybrid”?

Maybe they’re not always to blame. It’s been an adjustment introducing phrases like hybrid, RTO, and WFH into the national lexicon, and an additional headache trying to assign standard definitions to them.

So in your job search, be sure to check “Careers” pages for any company you’re applying to; it may take you an extra minute, but it’s worth clearly understanding their remote work policy before shooting them an application — no matter what the individual job description may tell you.

COMPANY SPOTLIGHT
  • Airbnb is an online marketplace that lets people book short-term stays, experiences, and unique accommodations offered by hosts around the world.

  • 130 open roles, primarily in Engineering, Data Science, and Marketing.

  • Airbnb has famously had a work-from-anywhere approach for years, but they have a caveat: they ask employees to visit the SF office once a month. CEO Brian Chesky says the cost for Airbnb to make that happen is more than worth it.
