🪧 Striking over WFH
Inside: Veeva is hiring over 600 remote positions. Plus: some millennials are ignoring RTO demands, digital surveillance doesn't work, 31% would strike over WFH, how to lead remotely, and more.
Good Morning,
As much as we talk about unnecessary workplace policies occurring in Corporate America, there’s one we’ve never mentioned that happened to make headlines in the sports world last week.
In 1976, a few years after George Steinbrenner took over the New York Yankees baseball team, he banned his players from growing out their facial hair, “trying to instill a certain sense of order and discipline in the ball club.”
The following season, they won the World Series — which, unfortunately for the players, probably gave George the impression that the team’s razor-sharp grooming discipline worked.
But just a few days ago, his son Hal Steinbrenner reversed the policy.
The Yankees are in a 15-season championship drought; maybe a renewed focus on results and less focus on facial appearance will help them reach the promised land again.

COMPANY SPOTLIGHT

Veeva builds cloud solutions for life sciences companies, so they can innovate more effectively, run more efficiently, and get to market faster.
654 open roles, primarily in Engineering, Consulting, Sales, and Marketing.
They have a “Work Anywhere” policy. From their website: “Work Anywhere means you can work in an office or at home on any given day. It’s about getting the work done in the way and place that works best for you. We invest in our offices to make them places where our employees like to go. If you work in the office three or more days a week, you will have a dedicated office workspace.”

Remote work headlines:
1 in 3 millennials are ignoring return-to-office demands.
Veeva, a software company in the life sciences industry (and featured above this week), has firmly rejected any RTO policies, successfully sticking with remote work.
A study by MIT and the University of California at San Diego finds that digital surveillance software is a poor substitute for engaging managers.
Despite headlines about big companies like JPMorgan calling workers back into the office, the shift to office work isn’t as drastic as it seems.
Employees’ distance from the office continues to be a measuring tool for how much time is required in the office, but varies substantially by company.
A JPMorgan analyst was fired after asking CEO Jamie Dimon during a recent town hall if he would consider letting lower-level managers dictate office policies; he was re-hired shortly after.
Walmart is closing more offices and forcing more white-collar workers to relocate to accommodate their office policies.
TikTok employees are balking at the return-to-office policy for their e-commerce division, which now requires employees to be in their office 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, tracked via their badges.
STATS
31.6%
That’s the percentage of employees who, according to WFH Research’s February data, said they would be willing to strike over the ability to work from home.
Surveyed employees were asked the question, “Would you be willing to start or join a strike over any of the following job features?”
And while pay is clearly number one, the ability to work from anywhere remains a benefit that many are adamant about maintaining.
