💪 RTO: power move
Inside: Aircall is hiring in Engineering and Customer Support. Plus: the best rationale for RTO I've seen, Dell goes fully in-office, 77% of America supports federal flexible work, and more.
Good Morning,
Last week, it was suggested that it’s always worth building your network even when you’re employed at a place you enjoy — you never know what could prompt a change in your employment.
Case in point:
the Mavs traded Luka and you think you’re irreplaceable at work

For those who don’t follow sports: one of the best basketball players in the NBA, Luka Doncic, was traded from Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, in exchange for players that don’t come close to matching the future value he could provide. Even worse for Mavericks fans: no one across the league understands why he was traded.
The same can happen in any job. Management teams make personnel decisions all the time that don’t make sense to employees (think… firing top employees and enacting RTO policies). So keep building that network, honing those skills, and staying curious about your industry.
And for the fellow Mavs fans out there… what just happened?!

ECON 101
The Economics of Return-To-Office

Kathryn Anne Edwards | Screenshot from Instagram
Labor economist Kathryn Anne Edwards shared an incredible 12-minute video on Instagram last week breaking down the reasons so many executives are pushing for a return-to-office.
First, she said what we all know by now: there isn’t any good data to justify return to office. The obvious results happen as a result of these mandates, as verified by plenty of studies in the last few years: talented employees leave those office-bound companies, productivity doesn’t increase, it’s more difficult to hire more talent, and profits don’t increase either.
And second, her big reason for RTO? Company bargaining power. Executives realized during the years of the pandemic that employees really liked remote work. But the companies had simply given it away for free, even though employees would be willing to sacrifice some of their salary if it meant they could work remotely.
Employment contracts almost always involve negotiation. And in any negotiation, it’s not advisable to give anything away for free.
By forcing office policy compliance, companies can offer employees remote work as a benefit, instead of providing raises or other financial benefits. For that reason, it can save these companies money in the short term.
For the long-term, though, I’ll add my two cents: employees are more productive, work longer, are happier, less likely to leave their company, and more, when given the ability to work from anywhere. So I believe the companies counting dollars and cents at the expense of their employees today are the ones more likely to lose in the future.
