🥊 Major corporations face RTO backlash
Inside: Axonius is hiring engineers and sales reps. Plus: Trump immediately calls for federal RTO, Tesla got sued for WFH bait-and-switch, Caribbean getaways, JP Morgan disables employee comments, 15K at WPP protest RTO, and more.
Good Morning,
Big week for DC: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidential Inauguration, and the Washington Commanders are in the conference championship for the first time since 1992.
DC may end up being a microcosm for remote work in the US this year as well. It was one of the cities that adopted WFH most quickly in 2020, as it’s home to an outsize number of knowledge workers that just need laptops and VPNs to work. But in the coming months, it will also face a threat in very close geographic proximity, with politicians calling for federal workers to be back into the office full-time.
Most remote workers in the US have faced a version of this with less whiplash in the last few years, at companies that gradually adopted remote-first policies through 2021, and then feebly attempted policy reversals in the last two years.
Will politicians’ potential enforcement of RTO in DC “trickle down” to corporate leadership? Only time will tell.
But to repurpose an MLK quote, I’m pretty confident that the arc of Corporate America — however long it may be — bends toward remote work.

Remote work headlines:
Hours after being sworn in as President, Trump signed an executive order requiring all federal employees to return to the office full-time. Enforcement is TBD, since many federal employees recently struck labor agreements that protect their workplace flexibility.
JP Morgan disabled comments on their internal website after their policy calling for return-to-office caused employee backlash. Friendly reminder that if there was any data that could justify return-to-office for employees, executives would have shared it by now.
WPP, the largest ad agency in the world, announced a 4-day office requirement and was immediately met with a 15,000-person petition. One senior employee said “I’ve yet to speak to a single colleague who is happy with the four-day RTO.”

STATS
46%
That’s the percentage of US employees who, according to the latest Pew Research Center data, would consider leaving their existing jobs if they were required to go back into the office five days per week.
Further: women (49%) are more likely than men (43%) to express that they would seek new employment. Similarly, younger workers and fully remote employees are also more likely to seek new employment, versus older workers or those who occasionally work in the office.
TRAVEL BUG
Remote work getaways
Maybe it’s because of the recent cold weather here in Texas, but the travel articles this week skew heavily toward warm weather locales:
