NEED TO KNOW

Remote work headlines:

  • Five hybrid work trends to watch in 2025, starting with #1: top talent will leave workplaces with strict RTO policies for more flexible companies.

  • Wisconsin governor threatens to veto any budget that includes return-to-office mandates for state employees, citing remote work’s productivity and equity advantages.

  • From WSJ Opinion: Don’t Let DOGE Kill Remote Work.

  • Remote work is helping prisoners find employment.

  • In Europe, power shifted from employees to employers, leading to more return-to-office policies (for now).

  • Half of companies with office space say their existing office leases influence their office attendance policies. You have to assume that when those leases expire
it’s likely those companies will add some WFH flexibility.

HOME OFFICE

New standing desk entrant

Grovemade | Gear Patrol

Grovemade has been an accessory brand for years, with great phone and home office products — in fact, it was one of the home office brands we featured when Remote Source first launched in 2017.

Now they’ve launched a desk, as featured here in Gear Patrol. It’s an electric standing desk, which alone won’t make a desk stand out in a competitive market. But they’ve added one feature in particular that will make any person who appreciates organization pay attention: that drawer you see in the picture above. It has a hidden handle, machined cork pockets, and larger compartments lined with merino wool for laptops.

Leave it to a brand that’s been focused on quality products for efficient workspaces to deliver something like this. The desk isn’t cheap (at $2,200) but if you’ll be using your desk for years to come, and you want built-in organization done for you, this will be worth a look.

REMOTE LEADERSHIP

How should you plan team offsites?

One reddit user shared a recent “team building” experience with their company: about 12-18 coworkers from across the US flew into the same city, rented a mansion, and spent a few days together — but it ended up being more work than fun. The user asks: how can they improve the experience?

Lots of advice in the comments (and it’s reddit — so lots of trolling as well) but here are a few of the useful themes from the discourse to keep in mind:

  • Stay at a hotel so everyone can have their own room / personal space

  • Establish clearly defined times for work and leisure

  • Don’t require travel on weekends

  • Aim for a city with typically good weather for that time of year

  • Pick a city with lots of fun activities in close proximity to the hotel

Onsites can be great; I’ve seen them work incredibly well for my own remote teams, and they will likely play a major role in most companies’ remote work policies in the future.

That’s why it’s especially important to get the basics above right, ensuring you’re optimizing for employee satisfaction and that everyone is on the same page about the purpose of the travel.
