NEED TO KNOW

Remote work headlines:

  • Pinterest executive opposes office mandates, says “while some leaders insist that remote work is stifling innovation, collaboration, and productivity, hard evidence shows the opposite.”

  • Return-to-office mandates are “an invisible pay cut” and might signal a weaker economy.

  • Remote jobs paying $250K+ spiked in Q3 compared to Q2 this year.

  • Baby boomers are less likely to retire when they work remotely; they’re able to move to new places or take up hobbies that would have previously required retiring from office jobs.

  • Employees with disabilities should look out for these four roadblocks when requesting remote work.

  • Remote workers got slightly fewer raises in 2024 than office peers. As one post stated, “That's not because you're less valuable — it's because the system wasn't built for this way of working.” But, as you know: the system is changing 💪

  • The war on remote work for federal employees ignores the positive data.

STATS

From WFH Research, December 2024

WFH Research conducted a poll, asking employed individuals to share their office attendance schedule and their burnout symptoms. Burnout symptoms listed in the study were:

  • Low energy or exhaustion

  • Negative feelings about your job

  • Anxiety about going to work (e.g. the "Sunday scaries")

  • Disappointment with your job performance

  • Disappointment with your career prospects

  • None of the above

Those who worked remotely, as the chart shows, showed fewer burnout sympoms than those who go into the office for any amount of time.

More WFH = lower burnout rates.

ERGONOMICS

Home office health

This Wall Street Journal article from November 2020 will remain prescient as long as people continue to work from computers wherever they are.

Tips shared by the ergonomic experts Deborah Read and Brian McEnaney, for wherever you’re working from:

  • Survey your equipment: Ditch broken task chairs and backless stools. Avoid wooden kitchen chairs if you can. Aim for a desk that’s 30 to 36 inches deep and at least 3 feet wide.

  • Get moving: Every hour, spend at least a couple minutes stretching or walking around.

  • Watch your posture: Don’t round your back into the dangerous Office Turtle position that Mr. McEnaney warns against. Relax your shoulders and keep your elbows to your side.

  • Sit tall: Make sure your eyes are level with the top of your computer screen and you’re an arms length away from the monitor. If you need to raise yourself up, stack pillows on your chair and use a box or binders to fashion a makeshift footrest.
