🇺🇸 Federal workers lock down hybrid

Inside: Abnormal Security is hiring remotely across the globe. Plus: Federal workers secure a hybrid schedule, lawyers and bankers aren't getting WFH, the best portable monitors, what to share publicly when job searching, and more.

Good Morning,

LinkedIn recently conducted a poll asking if remote workers were more likely to have “side gigs.” 34% of remote workers have some kind of side gig, compared to 29% of individuals who work onsite, and 29% of those in hybrid arrangements.

Is the 5% difference enough to warrant the claim that remote workers are more likely to have side projects? I guess so.

It’s another way remote work gives more power and flexibility to individuals. Why not use the time previously devoted to commuting, to build a business of your own?

Unfortunately, the downside here is that control-hungry leaders will surely use this data point as another excuse to bring employees back into the office.

Quit giving away our secrets, LinkedIn! 😤

NEED TO KNOW

Remote work headlines:

  • What were 2024’s biggest remote work trends? The West has more WFH than the South, the insurance industry has adopted remote work broadly, “structured hybrid” grows in popularity, and more.

  • Federal employees in the Social Security Administration struck a deal that locks in their existing hybrid work schedule through 2029, countering the expected RTO push by Trump’s DOGE effort.

  • Expect fewer parents to work in federal government roles if flexible work arrangements are taken away in DC.

  • Lawyers still want remote work, but it seems unlikely that current hybrid schedules will change meaningfully anytime soon.

  • Banks are bringing employees back to the office to avoid regulatory home office inspections.

  • Return-to-office mandates are making it more difficult for companies to hire quality talent.

  • Leaders expect return-to-office policies will die out in 2025. (Fingers crossed!)

TECH TOOLS

Xebec: The Ultimate Mobile Setup

Forever one of my favorite companies for remote work gadgets, Xebec began their product line with one of the first mobile Tri-Screen offerings on the market.

They’ve now improved and expanded: their screens are bigger, the screens *snap* into place, and they offer tons more accessories that make your setup as effective as possible.

I have the Snap, the light, the stack-up mount, and the phone charger — giving me such a great way to work productively from anywhere. (For credibility: I bought them all without discounts and they’re not paying me to say this!)

STATS

27%

That’s the percentage of employees worldwide that worked fully or mostly remotely in 2023, according to research published by Statista. This is up from 13% in 2020, before the pandemic impacted office attendance.

It’s always fun to see these macro-level statistics that show how prominent remote work has become. And we still have a lot of growth left to go, once more innovative leaders are promoted into management roles, shaping modern workplace policies based on their positive remote experiences.
