NEED TO KNOW

Remote work headlines:

  • The CEO of Glassdoor shared that remote work has been a huge benefit to the company, allowing them to attract talent they previously wouldnā€™t have had access to.

  • Leaders of three HR software companies that enable remote work ā€” Gusto, Remote, and Check ā€” share their thoughts on the global future of distributed work in this YouTube video.

  • Hundreds of employees at ZeniMax, a subsidiary of Microsoft, went on strike over Microsoftā€™s RTO policy.

  • Bosses and employees still canā€™t agree on how often to be in the office, and that disconnect doesnā€™t appear likely to change anytime soon.

  • This former big tech employee shares how he would ā€œquiet vacationā€ while working remotely, which allowed him to travel more frequently than he would have been able to otherwise. Spoiler alert: itā€™s a lot easier to do if youā€™re overachieving in your role.

  • Searches for cybersecurity certification have skyrocketed in recent years; as a field that often allows (and enables!) remote work, itā€™s reassuring to see that thereā€™s still substantial demand globally for new workers in this industry.

  • Loneliness is still an issue for remote workers, but it canā€™t just be solved with in-person requirements. The Harvard Business Review says organizations can take proactive steps to help their employees with the right approach.

  • Remote and hybrid work are both still on the rise, despite misconceptions from headlines. But you subscribe to this newsletter, so you knew that already, right?

BARGAIN BIN

Early Black Friday Deals

  • Uplift Desk ā€” the standing desk brand Iā€™ve used exclusively since 2016 ā€” has launched its holiday sale.

  • Best Buyā€™s official Black Friday sale has already begun, with deals on all kinds of electronics like external monitors, laptops, TVs, earbuds, coffee makers, massage guns, and a lot more.

  • The New York Times dropped their Early Black Friday Deals, which include Apple products, headphones, chargers, and more for remote workers.

  • Travel + Leisure collected 88 Black Friday deals on Amazon geared toward frequent travelers.

  • A Mashable tech editor shares some appealing tech deals, including a MacBook Air, a Samsung phone, and a 75-inch TV for just under $450.

Weā€™ll update this next week for Cyber Monday too!

GETTING POLITICAL

ā€œDOGEā€ calls for Federal RTO

Well, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are saying the quiet part out loud: requiring employees to return to the office will lead to resignations.

The two are expected to spearhead the ā€œDepartment of Government Efficiencyā€ in Trumpā€™s administration, which will likely reduce the federal workforce substantially.

An unfortunate part of that is their take on remote work, which mirrors JD Vanceā€™s talking point mentioned a few weeks ago: if federal workers are working from home ā€” are they even really working?!

Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees donā€™t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldnā€™t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home.

Elon Musk & Vivek Ramaswamy, in WSJ Opinion

Maybe one day this talking point will die out, but for now, as long as ā€œreturn to officeā€ accomplishes the goal of a workforce reduction, weā€™ll likely continue to hear it šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

STATS

-7%

Employee satisfaction with workplace collaboration dropped from 36% to 29% in the last year, according to a recent Gartner survey, as companies have forced employees to spend more time in the office.

Clearly, physical proximity and co-location is not a silver bullet to solve the collaboration challenge.

Jessica Knight, VP of Research at Gartner

Unsurprisingly, employees donā€™t think returning to the office is going to help their work endeavors.

Another discouraging stat: 30% of employees are avoiding more people at work than they were two years ago. Seems like thereā€™s more that needs to be done to build culture than just forcing people to be in the same room.
