Need to Know

🏡 How WFH may impact kids
Working remotely clearly has a positive net impact for many people, and the author of this article says his relationship with his kids is even better as a result.

But he’s concerned about setting boundaries and setting a good example for his kids when it comes to work responsibilities. It’s tough to explain to a child that just because you’re home with them, they can’t come up and talk to you any time they want. And while the flexibility of running errands midday is a huge perk of remote work, they may need to understand that many jobs don’t allow that — especially jobs they may be more likely to take on as teenagers.

He doesn’t have the answers yet, but it will be interesting to see how families adjust their parenting approaches as this generation is the first to have a high number of parents working from home. (Business Insider)

💼 Remote data entry jobs
As they’ve done for various career fields in the past, Tech.co shared several remote data entry job listings and tips for finding them online.

Simple searches for jobs — whether on Google or any job board — usually don’t cut cut it anymore for remote job seekers.

Among the resources and tips they share in this article: search for specific job keywords using Google. For example, typing this into Google search: “remote data entry site:jobs.lever.co” will return remote data entry jobs from lots of different companies that all use the Lever ATS to host their career pages.

As you can imagine, you can apply this in a number of different ways:

  • “remote data entry site:ashbyhq.com” would return results from companies that use the Ashby ATS

  • “remote marketing site:jobs.lever.co” would return marketing job results instead

It’s one more way you may be able to find a best fit remote job for yourself in a tight job market. (Tech.co)

🔔 Philadelphia mayor forces full return to office
Even though the Philadelphia mayor put this RTO mandate in place back in May, there was some question about whether it would be truly enforceable. An employee union sued the city over the mandate, stating it was harmful to workers and violates the rules of their employment contract.

But a judge rejected the union’s request this month, meaning most Philadelphia city employees are now required to work from the office every day of the week.

During the lawsuit, the union argued that it’s not a smart move, for a lot of reasons we’ve seen in the private sector. They say it will hurt recruiting efforts, there isn’t enough space to bring everybody back full-time, and that by putting this mandate in place in the summer with kids out of school, some families’ schedules have been quickly up-ended. 🇮🇹 Nomads welcomed in small European cities
It’s common to hear complaints about digital nomads infiltrating international cities and causing changes that locals don’t appreciate. But in smaller rural cities in Europe, digital nomads have been welcomed with open arms.

The primary reason for this is that people who grew up in smaller cities or villages often move to bigger population centers as adults, and far fewer people move to those smaller cities, causing a population decline.

But with the new surge in remote work, and with programs like Rooral and NATworking, many villages are now able to host digital nomads — ideally boosting their local economies and showing the visitors a way of life they may want to make permanent. (euronews)

✈️ Solo travel in North America and the Caribbean
Lonely Planet put together a list of 10 exciting destinations to check out in North America and the Caribbean that are particularly appealing for solo travelers — so if you’re looking for interesting places to work from without traveling too far, this list may be particularly useful:

  • British Virgin Islands

  • Aruba

  • Grenada

  • Riviera Maya, Mexico

  • Joshua Tree National Park, California

  • Santa Fe, New Mexico

  • Washington, DC

  • Olympic Peninsula, Washington

  • Montreal, Quebec

  • Banff, Alberta

I’ve only been to a few of these spots, so maybe that means I should get to work on planning the next “workation.” (Lonely Planet)

🖥️ Xebec product launch: Snap Accessories
One of my favorite remote work product brands, Xebec, is back with another Kickstarter product launch. This time, they’ve created accessories for their main product, the Snap, to even better accommodate remote workers.

They’ve already smashed their fundraising goal, guaranteeing this project will come to fruition. I ordered my Snap Accessories last week and it looks like they will go nicely with my current Snap setup. (Xebec on Kickstarter)

🙅🏻‍♀️ Avoid misunderstandings with remote coworkers
Avoiding misunderstandings at work is key to your success, and there are ways that companies and employees can ensure they’re reducing the chances of those potential conflicts.

Companies should provide opportunities for colleagues to connect socially, whether remotely or in person. This bridges personal gaps and allows people to open up about themselves and their lives outside of work.

Companies should also have policies in place to remove any possibilities of unfairness — their examples include applying this standard to promotions and projects, so that employees understand exactly why people got promoted or why certain decisions were made that could impact people directly.

Employees can do their part by asking for clarity when they don’t have it. Instead of making assumptions about what a colleague meant, it’s best to double-check to remove any uncertainty, especially in a remote work environment where communication is likely more asynchronous. (Fast Company)

📡 Starlink Mini is here
Starlink, Elon Musk’s internet service provider company, has launched the Starlink Mini. This allows devices to connect to the internet from anywhere in North America, and it’s portable enough to easily carry in a backpack.

It’s an incredible solution for those traveling around the continent nomadically who rely on an internet connection for work. (CNET)
