Need to Know

🇩🇪 Deutsche Bank office mandate faces “enormous resistance”
The CEO and COO of the global bank will soon have renewed discussions with labor reps about their initial decision to bring employees back to the office.

According to DBV, a labor union, Deutsche Bank doesn’t have enough office space to accommodate the policy recently announced which requires 3 days spent in the office per week. This comes at an already-difficult time for the bank, which is currently fighting against union demands for higher wages.

The DBV union leader says “this [office requirement] is an unnecessary battle front for Deutsche Bank that destroys reputation and trust.” (Fortune)

🎮 Rockstar Games uses security breaches as an excuse for RTO
The maker of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) game series has told their employees to return to the office five days a week, citing both productivity (without any provable stats, of course) and security as reasons for the policy change.

Rockstar recently dealt with leaks of the trailer and gameplay footage of the long-awaited GTA 6 game, and it seems that its leadership is using that incident as a reason they need to reassert control.

The video game industry has already dealt with recent layoffs and office mandates, so Rockstar following suit will make it even more difficult for those in the gaming industry to find remote jobs. (Bloomberg)

📉 Fewer $200K+ jobs are remote
The job site Ladders was built specifically to help candidates find jobs with salaries of $100K and above. Their recent analysis found that fewer high-paying job listings are allowing flexible work:

This isn’t too surprising, given that more companies have been calling for a return to office. And when that happens, leaders need to walk the talk, i.e. get their asses back to the office, if they want their employees to do the same.

But it’s all part of a brief return to office trend that will eventually give in to remote work. With more commercial leases expiring, more people wanting to be remote, and more companies proving with data that remote work is effective, it’s only a matter of time before these $200K jobs are primarily done away from the office - as many of them were in the last few years. (Bloomberg)

👩🏻‍⚖️ Law firms are reducing their office footprint
It turns out these $200K+ jobs might actually be shifting more remote. Law firms used to have a general rule of 1,000 square feet per lawyer when leasing office space, but that’s now closer to 600.

One regional managing partner at the firm Clifford Chance said “We don’t have everybody in the office all the time, and that’s why we don’t necessarily need that larger footprint.” (New York Times)

đź’Ş Greenhouse Chief People Officer touts remote benefits
There are plenty of leaders who will tell you remote work is working for them, and that it’s the way of the future. But it’s even more meaningful coming from an executive at a company that powers the job market.

Greenhouse is one of the largest applicant tracking system (ATS) software companies, so their insight into benefit and hiring trends shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Flexible work not only enhances a company’s competitiveness in the talent market, it also cultivates a workplace culture that prioritizes employee well-being and satisfaction. This contributes to increased productivity and overall organizational success—and companies that fail to get on board with flexibility will be left behind.

Donald Knight, Chief People Officer at Greenhouse

Knight expands on why remote work is so beneficial: more people are able to contribute to the workforce, DEI initiatives benefit, a sense of connection can be built virtually, and top talent will continue to go where they can have location flexibility. (Fast Company)

🤝 How to overcome remote challenges
As we’ve had more time to work remotely, the most common challenges of remote work have become more clear: strained communication, scheduling with employees in different time zones, and building a positive company culture.

Overcoming them isn’t impossible, though. Managers who do the following can expect much better results from their remote teams:

  • Set guidelines for communication, such as protocol for when to use emails, chat tools, and video calls.

  • Develop a schedule that highlights dedicated overlap time for employees; this ensures some time will be set aside for meetings while still respecting local time zones.

  • Encourage participation by setting up regular team- and company-wide meetings that give all employees visibility into company progress and offer them an opportunity to interact with leadership.

Experienced managers are likely nervous about this new remote world we live in. But the only constant in business is change, and those who adapt best will win. (Newsweek)
