Inside: The RTO policy as a "gentlemen's layoff," Tulsa Remote's secret sauce, and Martha Stewart bashes remote work.

Good Morning,

Today we’re shifting to a format that’s even more condensed than before.

“Bite-sized intel for remote workers” is the goal 🙂

The Google RTO crackdown gets backlash from employees: managers are now able to view office attendance data, upsetting employees who already questioned the WFH reversal. (CNBC)

📊 The cities with the largest net gain of remote workers since 2020: Austin, Denver, Dallas, Nashville. Cities with the largest net loss: NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago. (New York Times)

David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) blasted hybrid work in a recent blog post. The remote work advocate and author points out that hybrid policies ruin remote benefits by (1) requiring employees to live near an office, and (2) limiting company talent pools to local geographies. (DHH Blog)

AT&T announced that 60,000 managers must return to the office or leave the company. The AT&T CEO said about 15% of managers don’t live close to an office; this RTO policy accomplishes the results of a mass layoff in a more publicly-acceptable way. (Bloomberg)

Recently released texts between Elon Musk and Jason Calacanis reveal a plan for an RTO policy to reduce Twitter’s headcount. Calacanis has referred to this policy as a “gentlemen’s layoff.” (Fortune)

Yelp is fully embracing remote work. The company now only has one office in the US, and they’re saving about $27 million annually on real estate. (Axios)

3 reasons RTO mandates are missing the point: leaders need to provide psychological safety, trust, and collaborative environments as a foundation for work, wherever it’s being done. (Forbes)

Martha Stewart bashed remote work. Instead of trying to cite any supporting data, she just said the US would go “down the drain” like France, whatever that means. (CNN)

✈️ Should remote workers take hush trips? It boils down to company leadership - while remote work should mean you can work from anywhere, managers’ trust in their employees will dictate whether these workcation trips are formally advised. (NerdWallet)

✈️ Tulsa Remote has seen surprising success. The program, which pays remote workers $10,000 to relocate to Tulsa, says their community engagement is the “special sauce” that’s led to higher retention than any other similar programs. (Vox)
