Here are the main points from this article:

  • US jobs growth in January far exceeded economists’ expectations, adding 517,000 jobs instead of the expected 188,000.

  • Some tech layoffs are seeming more like risk-mitigation tactics to assuage investors instead of necessary changes to keep companies afloat.

  • The unemployment rate in January was 3.4%, the lowest in 50 years.

29% of respondents said remote work was an important factor when selecting jobs, but another 29% said they prefer office-based roles.

This isn’t too surprising, since other studies have shown that being in-person is more often preferred among workers beginning their careers.

While I’ve been able to work remotely in every job I’ve had since graduating college, I was primarily in-person in the first few years of my career. I learned more and met more colleagues than I would have otherwise, so I can understand the draw to office environments in that stage… at least for companies that aren’t remote-first.

We’re just over a month away from SXSW in Austin, TX, and I’m excited for the conference to be back in full effect (i.e. full attendance, no reneged sponsorships, etc.) for the first time since 2019.

If you’re attending and interested in the impact of remote work, check out the SXSW Workplace Revolution event track. And maybe we can connect there in person!

Cheers,
